His father Janos Eckstein was a medical doctor and taught at the Institute of Medicine and Surgery in Kolozsvár. Frigyes was raised in Pest from the age of 5 and completed his grammar school and university studies of humanities and medical sciences here. From November, 1825, he worked as a hospital auxiliary and then on 21 January, 1826, he was conferred the degree of doctor. He began his practice in Pest and very quickly he became one of the most sought-after physicians. He participated in the work of the Medical Library, which was founded in 1831. In 1839, in the company of his friend Baron József Eötvös, he travelled to Germany and Karlsbad. When being elected President of the Medical Society in October, 1839, he talked about the medical aspects of his travel experiences in his inaugural speech. At the first travelling assembly of Hungarian Physicians and Natural Philosophers held in 1841, he called for the development of medical topography. That same year he aspired to status at the Faculty of Medicine in Budapest, however, he had to retreat because of his sickness. He dealt with pathology taking in particular into consideration the cell tissue. In 1843 he was elected as dean of the faculty, a post he held for two academic years. In 1848 he aided the Government of Batthyányi as a health counsellor, maintaining this position till 1849.
