Schönbauer, József Antal

József Schönbauer Czech by birth was a medical doctor, zoologist and university professor. He taught as professor of zoology and mineralogy from 1789 until his death and as a locum he lectured on special pathology and medicine in 1790/91. Schönbauer was one of the first advocates of establishing the Natural Science Society and of the need to collect and preserve the natural treasures of Hungary. His fields of interests include ornitology as well as cataloguing and chemical analysis of Hungary’s mineral waters. His papers on flies and mosquitoes in Bánság are eminent. He served as a dean of the university in two academic years (1794/95, 1802/03) and as rector in one 1799/1800.
