János Szening studied surgery from György Stáhly, then worked as a military surgeon for three years. He participated in the war of succession with Prussia in 1778 and 1779 and became a prisoner of war. He was allowed to return home after six months of captivity. He became an assistant at the Department of Surgery in 1782. He took his degree as a master of surgery and obstetrics in 1785, then was appointed senior lecturer to György Stáhly, professor of surgery and obstetrics. He became an anatomy lecturer in 1790 and a surgeon in 1791. He took his degree as a doctor of medicine in 1797 when he was appointed professor ordinarius of anatomy. Szening served as medical officer in the rebel army of noblemen. After the death of Stáhly in 1802, his subjects, obstetrics and surgery were separated and Szening was appointed professor of anatomy and obstetrics. He was elected dean of the faculty for the academic year of 1805 and 1806, however, he did not complete his office term due to his death on 12th February, 1806.
